Koichi Takahashi (born 1974) is a Japanese researcher, entrepreneur, and composer whose work spans AI-driven science, artificial general intelligence (AGI), and computational systems biology. At RIKEN, he is Project Director of the Common Foundation Development and Infrastructure Project within the Advanced General Intelligence for Science Program (AGIS), and Team Director at the Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research. He also chairs the AI Alignment Network (ALIGN). In formal Japanese orthography, his surname is written 髙橋, using the hashigo-daka variant of 高; both forms are romanized “Takahashi.”

Early life and E-Cell

Born in Akita City, Takahashi began studying piano at four and programming at seven. He entered Keio University's Faculty of Environment and Information Studies in 1994. After studying computer music in Toru Iwatake's laboratory, he joined Masaru Tomita's laboratory and developed the first version of the E-Cell System, the first whole-cell simulation platform, in 1996. In an international collaboration with The Institute for Genomic Research (now the J. Craig Venter Institute), the E-Cell team constructed and published the first whole-cell-scale virtual cell model in 1999.

Takahashi received his Ph.D. from Keio University's Graduate School of Media and Governance in 2004. In 2005, he became the first Japanese recipient of a Human Frontier Science Program Cross-Disciplinary Fellowship and moved to the Molecular Sciences Institute in Berkeley, California. Working with Pieter Rein ten Wolde and colleagues at AMOLF in the Netherlands, he developed the enhanced Green's Function Reaction Dynamics (eGFRD) method for exact reaction-diffusion simulation at single-molecule resolution. In 2010, the group used the method to show how spatiotemporal molecular correlations affect intracellular signaling.

RIKEN and AI-driven science

He has led a research laboratory at RIKEN since 2009. From 2011, he participated in cell-simulation research on Japan's K computer. Beginning in 2016, he led a national-project team developing a computing platform for brain-inspired artificial intelligence for the supercomputer later named Fugaku. In parallel, from the mid-2010s he helped establish AI-driven science in Japan: the use of artificial intelligence and laboratory automation to mechanize parts of the process of scientific discovery.

From fiscal 2018 through fiscal 2024, Takahashi led the JST-Mirai project “Accelerating Life Sciences by Robotic Biology,” which developed autonomous experimental systems. One result, reported in 2022 with the ophthalmologist Masayo Takahashi and collaborators, was an AI-robotic system that autonomously identified optimal conditions for differentiating induced pluripotent stem cells into retinal pigment epithelial cells for ophthalmic applications. In 2024, he became Project Director of the RIKEN AGIS project responsible for shared infrastructure for scientific foundation models and laboratory automation.

Ventures and public-interest work

Takahashi also works to carry research into industry and society, through research startups and social enterprise. In 2015, as Chief Information Officer of Robotic Biology Institute Inc., he contributed to the practical deployment of LabDroid Maholo, a humanoid laboratory-automation robot. He co-founded Epistra Inc., a developer of AI systems for research automation, in 2018, and has advised the AI drug-discovery company molcure Inc. since 2020. He was also a co-initiator of the AI and Society Studies Group in 2015; the group was renamed the AGI and Society Studies Group in 2026.

His public-interest work connects science to the governance of advanced AI. He has served since 2015 as a board member and vice chair of the Whole Brain Architecture Initiative, has chaired ALIGN since 2023, and has chaired the AI-Robot-Driven Science Initiative (AIRDS) since 2025; he is a co-founder of all three. Through ALIGN, he drafted the first version of the National AGI Infrastructure (NAGI) proposal in 2025; the proposal, published in 2026, calls for frontier-AI training capacity to be treated as national infrastructure.

Writing and music

On August 10, 2026, Kodansha published his book 『AGI―人間を超える知能は文明をいかに変容させるか』 (AGI: How Superhuman Intelligence Reshapes Civilization), written in Japanese, in its Sensho Metier series. He has also led the music project Conchordal since August 2025.
